About the artist
Calpurnia was a Vancouver-based rock band best known for being fronted by actor Finn Wolfhard, who rose to fame on Stranger Things. The group formed while its members were still in high school, with Wolfhard on vocals and guitar joined by drummer Malcolm Craig, guitarist Ayla Tesler-Mabe, and bassist Jack Anderson, the latter two having played together since childhood. They were signed to Royal Mountain Records.
The band's sound leaned into jangly, lo-fi indie rock with a nostalgic, slightly hazy quality, drawing comparisons to acts like Mac DeMarco and Twin Peaks. Tesler-Mabe's melodic guitar work sat alongside Wolfhard's raw, adolescent vocal delivery, and the lyrics often explored themes of growing up, awkward relationships, and teenage restlessness. Songs such as «Greyhound», «City Boy» and «Blame» captured that mix of youthful energy and wistful melody.
Despite their brief run, Calpurnia earned attention beyond the usual novelty of a young actor's side project, largely due to genuine songwriting chops and a tight live sound. The band was active only for a short period before disbanding as its members pursued other paths, but their small catalog remains a notable entry in mid-2010s teen-fronted indie rock.
