Caifanes

Caifanes is widely regarded as one of the most influential Mexican rock bands of all time, credited with helping legitimize Spanish-language rock across Latin America during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Formed in 1987 in Mexico City by Saúl Hernández, Sabo Romo, Alfonso André and Diego Herrera, the band expanded to a quintet in 1989 with the addition of guitarist Alejandro Marcovich, whose interplay with Hernández became central to the group's sound.

Caifanes fused post-punk and new wave influences with distinctly Mexican folkloric elements, incorporating pre-Hispanic imagery, indigenous rhythms and Saúl Hernández's theatrical, poetic vocal delivery. This combination gave the band a sound that felt both cosmopolitan and rooted in Mexican identity, setting a template that later Latin rock acts would build on.

Songs like «La Célula Que Explota» and their cover of «La Negra Tomasa» became generational anthems, while «Afuera» and «Aquí No Es Así» reflect the darker, more atmospheric turn of their later work. Internal tensions eventually led to the band's split in the mid-1990s, with several members going on to form Jaguares, though Caifanes has reunited periodically, cementing its legacy as a foundational act of Rock en Español.
