About the artist
Café Tacvba is a Mexican rock band formed in 1989 in Ciudad Satélite, near Mexico City, widely regarded as one of the most influential and boundary-pushing acts in Latin American rock. The band's core lineup — Rubén Albarrán, Emmanuel «Meme» del Real, José Alfredo «Joselo» Rangel, and Enrique «Quique» Rangel — built a career defined by constant reinvention, weaving together rock, traditional Mexican folk instrumentation, electronic textures, punk, and cumbia into a genre-defying whole.
The band took its name from a coffee shop in downtown Mexico City, later altering the spelling to Café Tacvba to avoid legal conflict with the original establishment. Rubén Albarrán became known for adopting different stage names and personas across different eras and albums, reflecting the group's broader embrace of shifting identity and experimentation. Their catalog spans introspective acoustic ballads to abrasive electronic experimentation, often addressing Mexican identity, urban life, and social commentary with wit and depth.
Café Tacvba's influence extends across generations of Latin American musicians, and the band remains a touchstone act whose refusal to settle into one sound helped redefine what Latin rock could be, bridging alternative rock audiences with folk and popular Mexican music traditions.
