Bruce Hornsby & The Range

Bruce Hornsby is an American singer, songwriter, and pianist from Williamsburg, Virginia, who rose to fame in the mid-1980s fronting Bruce Hornsby and the Range. His piano-driven sound blended pop and rock with elements of country, bluegrass, and jazz, distinguished by his classically trained keyboard technique and socially conscious lyrics. The band's 1986 debut «The Way It Is» produced the title track, a hit built around a memorable piano riff that addressed racial inequality, and earned Hornsby the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

The Range, active through the late 1980s, also delivered hits like «Mandolin Rain», «The Valley Road», and «Every Little Kiss», cementing Hornsby's reputation as a thoughtful songwriter working at the intersection of heartland rock and adult contemporary radio. After the group disbanded around 1990, Hornsby continued as a solo artist, exploring jazz improvisation, bluegrass collaborations with musicians like Ricky Skaggs, and orchestral work, while periodically touring with a reconstituted Range lineup.

Hornsby is also known for his connection to the Grateful Dead, with whom he performed as a touring member in the early 1990s, and for writing songs later covered by artists across genres, including Tupac Shakur's sampling of «The Way It Is» hook in «Changes». His restless stylistic curiosity and virtuosic piano playing have made him a respected figure who never fully settled into one genre.
