Broken Social Scene

Broken Social Scene is a Canadian indie rock collective from Toronto, founded by songwriter Kevin Drew and multi-instrumentalist Brendan Canning. What began as an ambient, low-key project with their debut ‘Feel Good Lost’ evolved dramatically once the duo assembled a rotating cast of musicians drawn from Toronto's tight-knit indie scene to bring their material to life on stage. That collaborative, ever-shifting lineup became the defining feature of the band, blurring the line between a fixed group and a loose musical collective.

The band's breakthrough came with ‘You Forgot It In People’, an album that fused baroque orchestration, shoegaze textures, and indie rock energy into a sound that became hugely influential on the 2000s indie scene. Its most celebrated song, «Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl», along with tracks like «Lover's Spit», showcased the band's ability to layer dense instrumentation with intimate, emotionally resonant songwriting. Their sprawling, communal approach to recording — often featuring a dozen or more contributing musicians — gave their records a rich, orchestral density rarely heard in indie rock.

Over subsequent albums, including material behind songs like «Hug of Thunder» and «Stay Happy», Broken Social Scene continued exploring the interplay between intimacy and grandeur, cementing their reputation as one of the defining acts of the Toronto indie rock explosion and a launching pad for numerous musicians who went on to their own notable careers.
