Borat Sagdiyev is a fictional character created and performed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, presented as a bumbling, naive television journalist from Kazakhstan sent to explore American culture. First developed on Baron Cohen’s British sketch series in the early 2000s, the character became internationally famous through the 2006 mockumentary film «Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan», which used hidden-camera interactions with real, unwitting people to satirize prejudice, nationalism and American attitudes toward foreigners.
Music is woven throughout the Borat persona as part of its satirical toolkit: the character performs faux-Kazakh songs, most famously «In My Country There Is Problem» (widely known by its refrain «Throw the Jew Down the Well») and the mock national anthem «O Kazakhstan», deliberately crude, offensive lyrics used to expose audiences who laugh along or fail to question them. A belated sequel, «Borat Subsequent Moviefilm», arrived in 2020, continuing the same method with new songs and stunts aimed at contemporary American politics.
The character sits at the intersection of comedy and provocation rather than conventional music-making, using catchy, deliberately absurd songs as a Trojan horse for social commentary.
