Bomb the Music Industry!

Bomb the Music Industry! was an American music collective active from 2004 to 2014, led by songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jeff Rosenstock, previously known as a member of the ska-punk band Arrogant Sons of Bitches. The project became notable for releasing its albums as free downloads at a time when this was still an unusual practice for the industry, and for eschewing a fixed lineup — the earliest records were largely written and recorded by Rosenstock alone, often in his own apartment, with friends drafted in to record parts as needed.

Live, the band embodied a distinctly DIY, communal ethic: early shows saw Rosenstock performing over pre-recorded backing tracks played from an MP3 player, with audience members invited to learn the songs and join him on stage. Over time a more consistent touring lineup formed, and the band's sound moved fluidly between ska, punk, pop-punk, folk-punk and electronic elements, often within a single record, giving albums like «Get Warmer», «Scrambles» and «Vacation» a restless, genre-blending character.

The band's ethos extended to its merchandise, with members burning CDs and spray-painting t-shirts by hand after shows. Bomb the Music Industry! disbanded in 2014, after which Rosenstock continued as a solo artist, carrying forward much of the DIY spirit and songwriting energy that defined the collective.
