Böhse Onkelz

Böhse Onkelz are a German rock band formed in the Frankfurt area, one of the most commercially successful and controversial acts in German music history. Their 1984 debut album «Der Nette Mann» drew immediate attention and was ultimately indexed as harmful to minors, and in their earliest years the band was associated with the far-right skinhead scene, drawing intense public criticism.

From the early 1990s onward the band publicly and repeatedly distanced itself from right-wing extremism, denouncing both far-right and far-left ideologies, and over the following decades built one of the largest and most devoted fanbases in Germany despite remaining banned from radio and television. Musically they moved from their punk and street-rock roots toward a harder, more anthemic Deutschrock sound, later incorporating hard rock and metal elements, with songs built around massive singalong choruses.

Tracks like «Auf gute Freunde», «Mexico» and «Nichts ist für die Ewigkeit» became staples of German rock radio despite the band's outsider status, while «Der Platz neben mir» and «Wir ham' noch lange nicht genug» reflect their trademark blend of raw emotion and defiance. Known for tackling taboo subjects — violence, extremism, corruption, hypocrisy in the media — Böhse Onkelz remain a polarizing but enormously influential force, having sold out some of the largest stadiums in Germany.
