Bobby Vinton, born Stanley Robert Vinton Jr. on April 16, 1935, is an American pop singer and songwriter whose polished, string-laden ballads made him one of the defining voices of the early-to-mid 1960s. Nicknamed «The Polish Prince» for his Polish heritage, he built a repertoire of romantic, orchestral pop that stood apart from the emerging rock and roll sound of the same era.
His signature hit, «Blue Velvet», a cover of Tony Bennett's earlier recording, topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1963 and later found a second life as the inspiration for a well-known film of the same title. Other hits such as «Roses Are Red», «My Special Angel» and «Mr. Lonely» reinforced his reputation for tender, sentimental vocal delivery aimed at adult contemporary and easy-listening audiences.
Vinton's smooth tenor and old-fashioned romantic style gave him a long run of Billboard success even as pop music shifted around him, and songs like «Sealed with a Kiss» remain enduring standards of the era's love-song tradition.
