About the artist
Blues Traveler are an American blues rock jam band formed in Princeton, New Jersey, in 1987 by drummer Brendan Hill and vocalist-harmonica player John Popper. Rising out of the late-1980s and early-1990s jam band scene alongside acts like Phish and Widespread Panic, the group built its reputation on extended live improvisation and Popper's virtuosic harmonica playing, a signature that set them apart from other blues-rock outfits of the era.
Their commercial breakthrough came with their fourth album, four (1994), which produced the hits «Run-Around» and «Hook», both charting strongly on Billboard's adult alternative charts and bringing the band mainstream radio success beyond their jam-band following. The band suffered a major setback in 1999 with the death of bassist Bobby Sheehan, after which Popper, Hill, and guitarist Chandler Kinchla regrouped and added Tad Kinchla on bass and Ben Wilson on keyboards, releasing the album Bridge (2001) as a reconstituted five-piece.
Blues Traveler have remained active for decades, continuing to tour extensively and record new material, including the Traveler's Soul project that follows their 2021 album Travelers & Thieves-era work, blending soulful R&B textures with their established blues rock foundation. Their longevity and constant live presence have made them one of the enduring names of the American jam band tradition.
