Blue Öyster Cult

Blue Öyster Cult, often abbreviated BÖC, is an American hard rock band formed on Long Island, New York, in 1967. Emerging from the same scene that produced other proto-metal acts of the era, the band built a reputation for combining heavy riffing with literate, often science-fiction and horror-tinged lyrics, frequently penned in collaboration with rock critic and manager Sandy Pearlman and writer Richard Meltzer.

The classic lineup — Eric Bloom on lead vocals, Donald «Buck Dharma» Roeser on lead guitar, Allen Lanier on keyboards, and brothers Joe and Albert Bouchard on bass and drums — produced the band's most enduring work in the mid-to-late 1970s. Their signature song, «(Don't Fear) the Reaper», became a rock radio staple, while «Godzilla» and «Burnin' for You» further cemented their place in the hard rock canon. The band's music videos received significant early MTV airplay, helping shape the format in its infancy.

Blue Öyster Cult's sound blended arena-rock muscle with a darker, more cerebral sensibility than many of their contemporaries, influencing later generations of hard rock and metal acts. Roeser and Bloom have continued to lead various incarnations of the band into the 21st century, keeping the group's catalog alive on stage decades after its founding.
