About the artist
Blonde Redhead is an indie rock band formed in New York City in 1993, built around the interplay between vocalist and guitarist Kazu Makino and twin brothers Amedeo and Simone Pace, who handle guitar/vocals and drums respectively. The trio's name comes from a song by the no-wave band DNA, and their early records reflected that lineage, drawing heavily on the abrasive, angular sound of Sonic Youth and the broader downtown New York noise-rock scene of the early 1990s.
Over the following decade the band's sound steadily evolved away from raw noise rock toward something more textured and melodic, incorporating dream pop, shoegaze and eventually electronic elements. This shift became most pronounced on «Misery Is a Butterfly» and later releases, where lush string arrangements, atmospheric production and Makino's breathy vocals replaced the earlier dissonance. The interplay of two languages and two very different singing voices — Makino's and Amedeo Pace's — remains a defining feature of the group's records.
Blonde Redhead built a devoted following within American indie and alternative circles without ever chasing mainstream visibility, and its catalog is often cited as a bridge between 1990s noise rock and the more polished art-pop and dream-pop sounds that followed in the 2000s. Songs like «23», «Elephant Woman» and «For the Damaged Coda» remain touchstones of the band's catalog, the latter gaining wider exposure after being featured on the soundtrack to the television series Stranger Things.
