Black Marble

Black Marble is a synth-pop and cold wave project led by Chris Stewart, formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2011. The project channels the icy, minor-key synthesizer textures of early-1980s post-punk and minimal wave, filtered through a distinctly modern American underground sensibility, favoring driving drum-machine rhythms, gated basslines, and detached, reverb-soaked vocals.

Stewart's songwriting draws heavily on the aesthetic lineage of acts like Depeche Mode and New Order in their darker moments, but Black Marble's music is more spartan and hypnotic, built around repetition and mood rather than pop hooks. Tracks such as «It's Conditional» and «Iron Lung» exemplify this atmosphere: melancholic, machine-driven, and steeped in a kind of urban nocturnal isolation. Ty Kube contributed keyboards and synthesizers to the project's early work before departing in 2016, after which Stewart continued largely as the sole creative force.

Over the following releases, Black Marble refined its sound while relocating from New York to Los Angeles, subtly shifting the project's palette without abandoning its cold wave foundations. The band remains a touchstone within the American synth-pop and dark wave revival scene that gained momentum through the 2010s, valued for its consistency of mood and its faithful, unglossy take on analog synthesizer music.
