About the artist
Billie Holiday, born Eleanora Fagan in 1915, was an American jazz and blues singer widely regarded as one of the most influential vocalists in the history of American popular music. Rising through the New York jazz scene of the 1930s, she developed a highly personal, behind-the-beat phrasing style, drawing comparisons to horn players in the way she bent melody and timing to convey deep emotion with remarkable economy.
Her recordings with musicians such as Lester Young and Teddy Wilson helped define the sound of swing-era jazz vocals, and her interpretation of standards like «All of Me», «God Bless the Child» and «Summertime» remain touchstones of the American songbook. She is perhaps most renowned for «Strange Fruit», a haunting protest song about lynching in the American South, which she recorded in 1939 and which became one of the most powerful political statements in recorded music, cementing her reputation as an artist unafraid to confront difficult subject matter.
Holidays struggled with addiction and legal troubles throughout much of her life, and she died in 1959. Despite a career marked by hardship, her legacy endures through her singular vocal phrasing and emotional directness, which continue to shape jazz and popular vocal performance to this day.
