Bikini Kill

Bikini Kill was an American punk band formed in Olympia, Washington, in late 1990, featuring vocalist Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail. Emerging from the Pacific Northwest underground scene, the band became a defining force in punk’s feminist wing, writing raw, confrontational songs about sexism, abuse, and women’s autonomy, delivered with fierce energy and DIY intensity.

Bikini Kill is widely credited, alongside Tobi Vail, with pioneering the term Riot Grrrl, the underground feminist punk movement that spread through independently produced zines and a network of like-minded bands in the early 1990s. At their live shows, the band actively created a female-centric space, encouraging women to move to the front of the crowd, with Hanna known to intervene directly against audience members harassing women. This confrontational, community-oriented approach made them polarizing figures who faced significant hostility even as they built a devoted following.

Their output includes the 1991 cassette demo «Revolution Girl Style Now!» and their 1992 self-titled EP, songs like «Rebel Girl», «Suck My Left One», and «Double Dare Ya» becoming touchstones of the Riot Grrrl movement. Though their run was relatively short, Bikini Kill’s influence on feminist punk, DIY culture, and generations of musicians who followed remains foundational.
