Big Black

Big Black were an American noise rock band active from the early to mid-1980s, formed in Evanston, Illinois by Steve Albini while he was a journalism student at Northwestern University. Beginning as Albini's solo home-recording project built around a Roland drum machine, the group solidified into a full band once he was joined by guitarist Santiago Durango and vocalist/guitarist Jeff Pezzati, both formerly of Naked Raygun, with the drum machine remaining a permanent, credited member of the lineup.

The band's sound was defined by its brutal, metallic guitar tone, achieved partly through unconventional picks and heavily distorted amplification, paired with the mechanical, relentless pulse of the drum machine. Their lyrics and interviews carried a dark, confrontational, often satirical edge, tackling subjects like violence, small-town menace, and industrial decay, matching the abrasive, unforgiving quality of their music. Albini's uncompromising aesthetic and DIY ethic made Big Black one of the defining acts of the American underground rock scene of the era.

Though they were together for only a handful of years before disbanding in 1987, Big Black left a lasting influence on noise rock, industrial rock, and the broader independent music scene, and Albini went on to become one of the most respected engineers in underground and alternative music, working with countless bands in the decades that followed.
