Better Oblivion Community Center

Better Oblivion Community Center is a folk-rock duo formed by American singer-songwriters Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) and Phoebe Bridgers. The two crossed paths in Los Angeles, with Oberst later guesting on Bridgers' 2017 debut album «Stranger in the Alps». They began writing together informally, and after roughly a year of collaboration realized they had enough material for a full album, which they released as a surprise self-titled record in early 2019.

The project's sound blends Oberst's literary, weathered songwriting style with Bridgers' hushed, atmospheric delivery, resulting in songs that move between wry humor and stark emotional honesty. Tracks like «Dylan Thomas» and «Didn't Know What I Was in For» pair jangly, indie-folk arrangements with tightly interwoven harmonies, while quieter numbers such as «Chesapeake» lean into the duo's shared gift for melancholic storytelling.

As a side project for two established solo artists, Better Oblivion Community Center allowed Oberst and Bridgers to experiment outside their individual catalogs, folding in elements of classic rock, country and 90s alt-rock influences. The album was praised for its chemistry and unpretentious charm, and it further cemented Bridgers as one of the defining voices of the late-2010s indie scene while giving Oberst a fresh creative outlet alongside his long-running work with Bright Eyes.
