About the artist

Benjamin Zephaniah was a British poet, writer, and musician born in Birmingham, England, and raised in the Handsworth district, which he described as the Jamaican capital of Europe. Dyslexic and largely unable to read or write by the time he left school at thirteen, he built his poetry instead on oral tradition, drawing directly on Jamaican dub and reggae rhythms and the cadences of everyday speech. This grounding made him one of the most recognizable voices of British performance poetry, known for reciting his work aloud to live audiences rather than presenting it as page-bound academic verse.

His writing was explicitly political, engaging with racism, injustice, and what he called street politics, especially issues affecting Black communities in Britain. Tracks and poems such as «Dis Poetry», «The British», and «What Stephen Lawrance Has Taught US» reflect this commitment to social commentary delivered in accessible, rhythmic language. He deliberately positioned his art against the elitist image of poetry, insisting it belonged everywhere, including with people who never read books.

After a difficult youth in Birmingham that included a criminal record and a prison sentence, Zephaniah moved to London in his early twenties, seeking a wider audience beyond Black British readers alone. There he became involved with a workers' cooperative in Stratford, which helped launch his public career as a poet and performer, blending music, spoken word, and activism into a distinctive body of work.
