Beirut

Beirut is the musical project of American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon, formed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the mid-2000s. Condon began writing and recording largely on his own as a teenager, drawing heavily on Balkan brass music, French chanson, and Eastern European folk traditions, giving the project a distinctly Old World sound built around trumpet, flugelhorn, ukulele, and accordion rather than typical indie-rock instrumentation.

The debut album «Gulag Orkestar» (2006) established this sound immediately, followed by «The Flying Club Cup» (2007), which paid tribute to France with songs named after individual towns, and «March of the Zapotec» (2009), which incorporated a Mexican brass band recorded in Oaxaca. Later albums «The Rip Tide» (2011), «No No No» (2015), «Gallipoli» (2019), and «Artifacts» (2022) moved toward more personal and varied arrangements while retaining the horn-driven melancholy that defines the group.

Condon has described the name Beirut as a reference to a city shaped by conflict but standing as a symbol of cultural collision, not a political statement. Songs such as «Nantes», «Elephant Gun», and «Postcards from Italy» remain among the project's best-known work, and Beirut is widely credited with popularizing a chamber-folk, world-music-inflected strand of American indie music in the late 2000s.
