Beck, born Beck David Hansen on July 8, 1970, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer known for restlessly reinventing his sound across a career that has touched folk, funk, hip-hop, psychedelia, and lo-fi indie rock. He broke through in 1994 with «Loser», a slacker-generation anthem that fused folk-rap delivery with sample-based production, positioning him as an unlikely alternative-rock star during the peak of grunge and giving voice to a distinctly ironic, DIY sensibility.

Rather than repeat that formula, Beck spent the following decades moving fluidly between genres and moods, from the funk-inflected party record Odelay and the futuristic Midnite Vultures to the stripped-down, melancholic Sea Change and the eclectic experimentation of Mutations and Guero. His lyrics, often surreal and collage-like, have drawn comparisons to Bob Dylan's mid-1960s work, while his production choices ranged from junkyard-style sampling to lush studio orchestration.
