About the artist
Bauhaus were an English band from Northampton formed in 1978, widely regarded as one of the founding acts of gothic rock. The classic lineup of Peter Murphy on vocals, Daniel Ash on guitar, David J on bass, and Kevin Haskins on drums built a sound rooted in post-punk's stark minimalism, stretched into long, dub-influenced, atmospheric pieces built around reverb-heavy guitar and Murphy's theatrical, Bowie-indebted baritone.
Their 1979 debut single «Bela Lugosi's Dead», a nearly nine-minute meditation on horror-film iconography, became a foundational text for the goth subculture and is frequently cited as the genre's opening statement. Albums like «In the Flat Field», and songs such as «Dark Entries», «She's in Parties», and «The Passion of Lovers», expanded on that template with a mix of glam theatricality, funk-inflected rhythm, and post-punk austerity that set them apart from more straightforwardly punk-descended contemporaries.
The band split in 1983 but reunited multiple times over the following decades, and its members went on to prolific solo and side-project careers, including Love and Rockets. Bauhaus's fusion of dramatic stagecraft, literary and cinematic reference points, and sonic experimentation left a lasting mark on gothic rock, industrial, and alternative music that followed.
