About the artist
Batushka is a Polish black metal project built around a concept of Orthodox Christian liturgy transformed into extreme metal. Formed in Białystok, the band's music is structured around the «Yekteniya» (litany) format, with lyrics drawn from Church Slavonic liturgical texts, and its live performances feature members dressed as Orthodox priests amid incense and candlelight, staged almost like a ritual rather than a concert.
The project's 2015 debut album «Litourgiya» drew wide attention in the metal underground for fusing droning, ritualistic atmosphere with harsh black metal instrumentation, and tracks like «Ectenia I» and «Polunosznica» became emblematic of its sound. The band's history was complicated by a legal dispute between its founding members over rights to the name, which led to two separate acts touring and releasing music as «Batushka» for a period before the matter was resolved in court.
Despite its heavy use of Orthodox iconography and liturgical language, Batushka has stated it is not a Christian or religious act, instead treating the imagery as an artistic and atmospheric device. The project remains a distinctive entry in the black metal scene for its theatrical, liturgically-inspired presentation.
