Bathory

Bathory were a Swedish extreme metal band from Vällingby, near Stockholm, formed in the early 1980s around Quorthon (Tomas Forsberg), the group's guitarist, vocalist and principal songwriter. Quorthon was born in 1966 and was found dead in his apartment in 2004, with heart failure the presumed cause. Almost entirely his own creative vision, Bathory started out as one of the earliest and most influential black metal bands, with a raw, abrasive sound built on shrieked vocals, buzzing guitars and primitive production.

The band's first four albums are widely cited as foundational blueprints for Scandinavian black metal, shaping the aesthetic and intensity that later defined the genre across Norway and Sweden. From the mid-1980s onward Quorthon steered Bathory toward a very different direction, incorporating slower tempos, mythological and historical themes drawn from Norse legend, and grander, more melodic arrangements.

This shift culminated in the 1988 album Blood Fire Death, widely regarded as the record that launched Viking metal as a distinct genre, with tracks like «A Fine Day to Die» and the title track showcasing an epic, folk-influenced sound. Bathory's dual legacy as pioneers of both black metal and Viking metal makes them one of the most important and influential bands in extreme metal history.
