Barry McGuire

Barry McGuire is an American singer best known for his gravel-voiced 1965 protest anthem «Eve of Destruction», a song that became one of the defining sounds of mid-1960s social unrest and topped the US charts despite radio bans in some markets. Before his solo breakthrough he was a member of the folk group the New Christy Minstrels, giving him a grounding in vocal harmony and folk tradition that shaped his later work.

McGuire's raspy, urgent delivery and the topical, apocalyptic bent of «Eve of Destruction» made him a symbol of folk-rock's turn toward protest music, and he crossed paths with figures central to the era's Laurel Canyon scene, including future members of The Mamas & the Papas, whose own «California Dreamin'» is closely associated with that circle. In later decades he re-recorded and revisited the song in different contexts, including versions that folded in scripture, as his career shifted toward Christian music.

That shift produced songs like «Chosen Generation» and «Communion Song», reflecting McGuire's transition from secular protest singer to an artist working within contemporary Christian music, a path that broadened his catalogue while keeping the same direct, plainspoken vocal style that defined his earlier hits.
