Baroness

Baroness is an American rock band formed in Savannah, Georgia, fronted by vocalist, guitarist and visual artist John Dyer Baizley, who also designs the band's distinctive album artwork. The group began in the sludge-metal underground, releasing dense, riff-heavy early records before gradually opening their sound to melody, letting bluegrass-tinged acoustic passages and psychedelic guitar interplay sit alongside heavier material.

Baroness name their studio albums after colors — «Red Album», «Blue Record», «Yellow & Green», «Purple», «Gold & Grey» — a device that tracks the band's evolving palette from raw, sludge-rooted heaviness toward more expansive, melodic hard rock. Tracks like «Take My Bones Away» and «March to the Sea» capture the earlier, more aggressive end of that arc, while «Chlorine & Wine» and «Shock Me» show the more atmospheric, hook-driven songwriting of their later work.

In 2012, the band survived a serious bus crash while touring in England, an event that led to lineup changes as some members stepped back to recover, while Baizley continued leading the band forward. Baroness remain respected for treating each album as both a musical and visual statement, with Baizley's artwork functioning as a visual signature for the band's sound.
