Bad Brains

Bad Brains are an American hardcore punk band formed in Washington, D.C. in 1976, widely regarded as one of the genre's founding acts. The band began as a jazz fusion group called Mind Power before pivoting toward punk after discovering the genre's raw energy, quickly distinguishing themselves through the sheer technical skill and speed the members brought from their jazz backgrounds — a rarity in early hardcore.

What set Bad Brains apart was their fluid movement between blistering hardcore punk and Jamaican-influenced reggae, often within the same set or even the same song, a duality captured most famously on their self-titled 1982 debut, often cited as one of the most important hardcore albums ever made. Vocalist H.R.'s explosive stage presence, guitarist Dr. Know's technically sharp riffing, and the airtight rhythm section of Darryl Jenifer and Earl Hudson gave the band a musicality that set a bar few hardcore contemporaries matched. Their concept of "P.M.A." — Positive Mental Attitude — also gave the band a distinct philosophical identity within a scene often defined by nihilism.

The band's influence extended far beyond hardcore, shaping the crossover between punk and metal and later informing funk-metal and rap-rock acts. Albums like «I Against I» pushed their sound further into metal and funk territory, while songs such as «Banned in D.C.» and «Pay to Cum» remain foundational texts of the hardcore canon. Despite lineup shifts and hiatuses over the decades, Bad Brains' original quartet has repeatedly reunited, and their status as a formative influence on punk, metal, and alternative music at large remains firmly intact.
