Avatar

Avatar is a Swedish metal band from Gothenburg, formed in 2001 by drummer John Alfredsson and guitarist Jonas Jarlsby, later joined by vocalist Johannes Eckerström, bassist Henrik Sandelin and guitarist Simon Andersson. Over two decades the band has evolved from straightforward death and thrash metal roots into a theatrical, genre-blending act known for its circus-inspired imagery, elaborate stage costumes, and Eckerström's charismatic, ringmaster-like persona.

The band's early releases, including the demo Personal Observations, the EP 4 Reasons to Die, and full-length debut Thoughts of no Tomorrow through Gain Records, established them within the Swedish extreme metal scene. Subsequent albums, including Schlacht and the self-titled Avatar, saw them touring alongside acts like Impaled Nazarene, Evergrey, Obituary, and Hardcore Superstar, steadily building their reputation on the European festival circuit.

Avatar later became known for a distinctive «carnival metal» aesthetic, pairing heavy, groove-laden riffs with dark carnival and circus themes across songs like «Hail the Apocalypse», «Bloody Angel», and «The Eagle Has Landed». Their willingness to blend melodic hooks, aggressive metal instrumentation, and theatrical storytelling has set them apart within modern metal, earning a dedicated international fanbase drawn to both the music and the band's striking visual identity.
