Atreyu

Atreyu is an American metalcore band formed in Orange County, California in 1998, taking their name from the book and film The NeverEnding Story. The band helped define the mid-2000s metalcore sound, blending aggressive breakdowns and screamed verses with melodic, anthemic choruses that pulled the genre closer to mainstream rock radio.

Their breakthrough came with the albums Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses and The Curse in the early 2000s, followed by the more melodic A Death-Grip on Yesterday and Lead Sails Paper Anchor, which broadened their audience beyond the hardcore scene. The band's sound has long relied on the interplay between harsh and clean vocals, a formula that shaped countless bands in the post-hardcore and metalcore space that followed.

After longtime unclean vocalist Alex Varkatzas departed, drummer and clean vocalist Brandon Saller stepped into the frontman role, with the band continuing to release records such as In Our Wake and Baptize into the late 2010s and 2020s. Across more than two decades, Atreyu has remained one of the genre's steady, recognizable acts, balancing heavy instrumentation with hook-driven songwriting.
