About the artist
Aquarium (Аквариум) is one of the oldest and most influential Russian rock bands, founded in Leningrad in 1972 by Boris Grebenshchikov and Anatoly Gunitsky. Over more than five decades the band has gone through numerous lineup changes, with Grebenshchikov remaining its constant frontman, vocalist and guitarist. The group emerged from the Soviet-era underground rock scene and became a defining voice of Leningrad rock, blending folk, art-rock and poetic, philosophically charged lyrics.
Aquarium helped shape the sound and spirit of Russian-language rock music, influencing generations of musicians who followed. Grebenshchikov's literary, allusive songwriting — drawing on Russian poetry, Eastern philosophy and Christian imagery — set the band apart from more straightforward rock acts of its era. Songs like «Город», «Поезд в огне» and «Рок-н-ролл мёртв» became touchstones of the genre and are still widely performed and referenced.
The band's sound has evolved across decades, incorporating folk instrumentation, world-music textures and a shifting cast of collaborators over the years.
