Anathema

Anathema are an English rock band formed in Liverpool in the early 1990s. They began as one of the pioneering acts of the doom-death metal scene alongside peers like My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, built around growled vocals and heavy, downtuned guitars. Following the departure of original singer Darren White in 1995, guitarist Vincent Cavanagh took over lead vocals, and the band embarked on a gradual but radical transformation away from metal toward atmospheric, melodic rock.

Over the following decade Anathema shed their doom roots almost entirely, moving through gothic and progressive textures into a sound defined by soaring vocal melodies, dynamic builds, and emotionally direct songwriting. Albums such as «A Fine Day to Exit» marked a turning point, trading despair for a more open, cinematic atmosphere, while later work leaned further into a hopeful, expansive tone, as heard on songs like «One Last Goodbye» and «Untouchable, Part 1» and «Untouchable, Part 2».

The band is often cited as one of the defining examples of a metal act reinventing itself as a melodic rock and progressive outfit without losing emotional weight. Their influence is frequently noted in discussions of post-metal and atmospheric rock, and their catalogue spans from the harshness of their early releases to the widescreen, cathartic sound of their more recent albums.
