Amorphis

Amorphis is a Finnish band formed in 1990 in Helsinki following the breakup of Violent Solution, initially featuring Jan Rechberger on drums, Esa Holopainen on lead guitar, Tomi Koivusaari on vocals, and Olli-Pekka Laine on bass. The band signed to Relapse Records and released its first two albums, «The Karelian Isthmus» and «Tales from the Thousand Lakes», establishing themselves within the death metal scene of the early 1990s.

Over time Amorphis underwent significant stylistic evolution, moving away from pure death metal toward a cleaner, more melodic and progressive sound that draws heavily on Finnish folklore, particularly the Kalevala epic. This transformation was accompanied by several lineup changes through the mid-1990s, including the arrival of keyboardist Santeri Kallio, drummer Pekka Kasari, and vocalist Pasi Koskinen, who shared clean and harsh vocal duties with Tomi Koivusaari before Tomi stepped back from singing.

The band's name, derived from the Greek word for shapeless or without determinate form, reflects their willingness to continually reshape their sound across a long discography. Songs such as «Silent Waters», «House of Sleep», and «The Bee» showcase the melodic, atmospheric approach that has defined the band's mature era, built around longtime guitarist Esa Holopainen's songwriting and the current vocalist's dual clean and harsh delivery.
