About the artist
Alabama 3 (also known in the United States as A3, after a legal dispute with the American country group Alabama) are an English band from Brixton, London, whose music fuses country, acid house, blues, and gospel into a genre-defying sound. Their name references the Scottsboro-related Alabama 2 case and, more broadly, historic miscarriages of justice, echoing other allusions like the Birmingham Six and Guildford Four.
The band is best known internationally for «Woke Up This Morning», whose Chosen One remix became the opening theme for the HBO series The Sopranos, introducing their gritty, sample-heavy, gospel-tinged electronic country sound to a global audience. Their catalogue mixes irreverent, satirical lyrics with deep grooves, spanning tracks like «Mao Tse Tung Said», «Ain't Goin' To Goa», and «Hello... I'm Johnny Cash», reflecting influences from British acid house culture as much as American roots music.
Alabama 3 have released several studio albums alongside numerous live recordings and bootlegs, building a devoted cult following, particularly in the UK, where they remain a staple of the festival circuit despite rarely touring abroad.
