Akira Yamaoka is a Japanese composer, guitarist, and sound designer best known for shaping the audio identity of Konami's Silent Hill franchise. Rather than writing conventional orchestral game scores, he built soundscapes out of alternative rock, trip-hop, industrial noise, and ambient drone, blurring the line between music and dread-inducing atmosphere. This approach made him one of the most influential figures in video game music, admired for treating sound design and songwriting as a single craft.

From the third Silent Hill installment onward, Yamaoka began incorporating full vocal tracks into his scores, collaborating with singer Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and producer-vocalist Joe Romersa, alongside contributions from the duo Interlace.
