About the artist
AJJ, formerly known as Andrew Jackson Jihad, is an American band formed in 2004 in Phoenix, Arizona, built around the core duo of Sean Bonnette (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) and Ben Gallaty (bass, double bass, backing vocals). The group emerged from the folk punk scene, known early on for raw, lo-fi recordings paired with lyrics addressing mental health, poverty and political frustration with dark, often absurdist humor.
With the 2014 album Christmas Island, the band began expanding beyond its acoustic folk punk roots into a fuller, more varied sound incorporating elements of indie rock and experimental arrangements — a shift that coincided with their name change to the abbreviated AJJ. Later releases continued to broaden their sonic palette while retaining the sharp, confessional songwriting that defined their earlier work.
Songs like «Big Bird», «Rejoice» and «Bad Bad Things» reflect the band's blend of vulnerability, social commentary and dark wit. AJJ has built a devoted following within the American DIY and punk scenes, respected for its evolution from stripped-down folk punk into a more musically ambitious project without losing its lyrical honesty.
