About the artist
ABBA are a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972, comprising Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad — the initials of their first names give the band its name. Two marriages within the group (Agnetha and Björn, Benny and Frid) shaped both their close vocal blend and, later, the emotional undercurrent of their songwriting as those relationships ended.
The group's breakthrough came with their 1974 Eurovision Song Contest win for «Waterloo», which launched them into international stardom. Over the following decade they became one of the best-selling acts in pop history, known for lush, meticulously arranged production that fused orchestral pop, disco, rock, and folk-tinged melody with an unmistakable ear for hooks. Songs like «Dancing Queen», «Mamma Mia», «Chiquitita», and «The Winner Takes It All» combined bittersweet lyrics with buoyant, radio-ready arrangements.
Despite the divorces within the band, ABBA continued recording into the early 1980s before going on hiatus, their catalogue later fueling the musical and film franchise Mamma Mia! and a broader pop-culture revival. Their influence on modern pop production and songwriting craft remains widely acknowledged.
