2Pac, nascido Tupac Amaru Shakur no Harlem, Nova York, em 1971, filho de membros do Partido dos Panteras Negras, passou por Baltimore antes de se estabelecer na região da Baía de São Francisco, onde ingressou no Digital Underground como roadie e dançarino antes de sua estreia solo. Seu primeiro álbum, «2Pacalypse Now» (1991), o consolidou como um narrador disposto a enfrentar pobreza, violência policial e desigualdade, seguido por «Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.» e o marcante álbum duplo «All Eyez on Me» (1996).
Sua música combinava crítica social crua com vulnerabilidade introspectiva e bravata desafiadora, uma mistura que fez com que canções como «Dear Mama», «Changes», «California Love» e «Keep Ya Head Up» ressoassem muito além do público do hip-hop. Foi também um ator notável, aparecendo em filmes como «Juice», «Poetic Justice» e «Above the Rim», e sua rivalidade com a cena do rap da Costa Leste, refletida em faixas como «Hit 'Em Up», tornou-se um dos episódios mais marcantes da história do hip-hop.
2Pac foi baleado e morto em Las Vegas em setembro de 1996, aos 25 anos, e material lançado postumamente sob o pseudônimo Makaveli e outros projetos mantiveram sua influência viva. Ele é amplamente considerado uma das figuras mais importantes e duradouras da história do rap.
