2Pac, nacido Tupac Amaru Shakur en Harlem, Nueva York, en 1971, hijo de miembros del Partido de las Panteras Negras, pasó por Baltimore antes de establecerse en el Área de la Bahía, donde se unió a Digital Underground como roadie y bailarín antes de su debut en solitario. Su primer álbum, «2Pacalypse Now» (1991), lo consolidó como narrador dispuesto a enfrentar la pobreza, la violencia policial y la desigualdad, seguido por «Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.» y el emblemático álbum doble «All Eyez on Me» (1996).
Su música combinaba una cruda crítica social con vulnerabilidad introspectiva y una bravuconería desafiante, una mezcla que hizo que canciones como «Dear Mama», «Changes», «California Love» y «Keep Ya Head Up» resonaran mucho más allá del público del hip-hop. También fue un actor destacado, apareciendo en películas como «Juice», «Poetic Justice» y «Above the Rim», y su enfrentamiento con la escena del rap de la Costa Este, plasmado en temas como «Hit 'Em Up», se convirtió en uno de los episodios más trascendentales de la historia del hip-hop.
2Pac fue asesinado a tiros en Las Vegas en septiembre de 1996, a los 25 años, y el material publicado póstumamente bajo el alias Makaveli y otros proyectos mantuvo viva su influencia. Es ampliamente considerado una de las figuras más importantes y perdurables en la historia del rap.
