About the artist
2Pac, born Tupac Amaru Shakur in Harlem, New York City in 1971 to Black Panther Party members, moved through Baltimore before settling in the Bay Area, where he joined Digital Underground as a roadie and dancer prior to his solo debut. His first album, «2Pacalypse Now» (1991), established him as a storyteller unafraid to confront poverty, police violence and inequality, and he followed it with «Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.» and the landmark double album «All Eyez on Me» (1996).
His music blended raw social commentary with introspective vulnerability and defiant bravado, a combination that made songs like «Dear Mama», «Changes», «California Love» and «Keep Ya Head Up» resonate far beyond hip-hop audiences. He was also a notable actor, appearing in films such as «Juice», «Poetic Justice» and «Above the Rim», and his feud with the East Coast rap scene, embodied in tracks like «Hit 'Em Up», became one of the most consequential episodes in hip-hop history.
2Pac was shot and killed in Las Vegas in September 1996 at age 25, and material released posthumously under the Makaveli alias and other projects kept his influence alive. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and enduring figures in the history of rap.
