About the artist

Željko Samardžić is a pop and traditional-leaning singer born in 1955 in Mostar, in what was then Yugoslavia. Before the wars of the 1990s he was already a well-liked local performer, singing at festivals and running his own café in the city, closely tied to the everyday cultural life of Mostar rather than to national fame.

Displaced by the war, he moved to Belgrade, where he began performing in clubs and restaurants and was eventually noticed for his warm, expressive voice suited to melancholic ballads. Working with established songwriters, he built a catalog of emotional pop songs that resonated across the former Yugoslav republics, turning him into one of the region's most recognizable voices of heartbreak and longing.

His sound blends Balkan pop sensibilities with the sevdah-adjacent emotional delivery typical of performers from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and songs such as «Grlica» and «Oči tvoje» remain staples of his live shows. He continues to be celebrated as a symbol of shared musical taste across Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, and Montenegro, appearing regularly at regional festivals and concerts decades into his career.
