Юрий Шатунов (Yurii Shatunov)

Yurii Shatunov (September 6, 1973 — June 23, 2022) was a Soviet and Russian singer from Kumertau, Bashkortostan, best known as the lead vocalist of Laskovyi May, one of the most commercially successful pop acts of the late Soviet era. Discovered as a teenager, he became the group's boyish, sentimental voice, and the band's soft, melodic pop songs about youth, first love, and longing swept the USSR in the late 1980s, making Shatunov a household name and teen idol to millions.

Laskovyi May's sound was defined by simple, catchy synth-pop melodies paired with Shatunov's high, tender vocal delivery, a formula that resonated deeply amid the social changes of perestroika-era Russia. He remained the face of the group through 1991, after which he continued performing and recording as a solo artist, revisiting the group's legacy while building his own catalogue of sentimental pop songs.

Over the following decades Shatunov remained a fixture of Russian pop nostalgia, periodically returning to public attention with tours and new releases that appealed to fans who had grown up with his music. He died in June 2022, leaving behind a legacy as one of the defining voices of late-Soviet pop and a symbol of the era's mass-market music culture.
