yung kai, born Max Zhang on July 5, 2002, is a Chinese-Canadian singer, songwriter and producer based in Vancouver who grew up in Kuching, Sarawak. Before turning to music full-time he was a high school volleyball player with plans to study computer engineering, but songwriting pulled him in a different direction. He built his following organically on TikTok and Instagram, where fans connected with the intimacy and vulnerability of his lyrics long before mainstream attention arrived.

His sound sits at the soft, melodic end of contemporary indie pop: airy vocals, gentle acoustic and lo-fi production, and lyrics centered on longing, romance and self-reflection. Tracks such as «blue», «wildflower», «my light (我的光)» and «do you think you could love me?» showcase this diaristic, bedroom-pop sensibility.

yung kai's breakthrough came in 2024 when «blue» went viral on TikTok, climbing to number two on the Spotify Global Viral Chart and later entering the platform's Top Global Chart, introducing him to a worldwide audience.
