About the artist
Xiu Xiu is an American experimental and art rock band formed in 2002 by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart, who has remained the group's constant creative force through a revolving cast of collaborators over the years. The band's name references the 1998 Chinese film «Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl», hinting at the unflinching, often uncomfortable emotional territory the group explores.
Musically, Xiu Xiu is known for its confrontational blend of noise, electronics, twisted pop structures and raw, theatrical vocal delivery, tackling themes of trauma, sexuality, mental illness and despair with an intensity rarely matched in independent music. Songs like «I Luv the Valley OH!», «Ian Curtis Wishlist» and «Mary Turner Mary Turner» exemplify the band's ability to fuse fragile melody with abrasive production and disquieting lyrical honesty.
