Wir sind Helden

Wir sind Helden were a German pop-rock band active from 1999 to 2012, formed in Berlin and closely associated with the city's music scene of the early 2000s. Fronted by singer Judith Holofernes, the band became one of the defining acts of the German-language «Neue Deutsche Welle»-adjacent pop-rock revival, known above all for sharp, ironic, and socially observant lyrics.

Musically, the group combined catchy, guitar-driven pop-rock hooks with a distinctly literate approach to German-language songwriting, often skewering consumerism, conformity, and modern anxieties with wit and directness. This lyrical sensibility, paired with Holofernes's expressive vocals, set them apart from much of the German pop landscape of the time and earned them a devoted following.

Songs like «Nur ein Wort», «Denkmal», and «Guten Tag» became touchstones of 2000s German pop, helping popularize a wave of thoughtful, German-language guitar pop alongside contemporaries. The band disbanded in 2012, with Holofernes going on to a solo career, but Wir sind Helden's catalogue remains a reference point for consumption-critical, lyrically driven German pop-rock.
