William Finn

William Finn is an American composer and lyricist best known for writing musicals that blend confessional, autobiographical storytelling with witty, emotionally direct pop-influenced songwriting. He first gained attention with the trilogy that became known as Falsettos, following the character Marvin through the March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland song cycles, works praised for tackling gay identity, divorce, and the AIDS crisis with humor and heart. The combined piece won the 1992 Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical.

Finn's musical voice favors rapid, conversational lyrics set to catchy, often syncopated melodies, closer to the tradition of Stephen Sondheim than to conventional Broadway balladry, but with a distinctly personal, plainspoken wit. Songs such as «The I Love You Song», «I’m Not That Smart», and «I’d Rather Be Sailing» showcase his gift for turning ordinary domestic moments into sharply observed musical scenes.

Beyond Falsettos, Finn wrote the score for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, another critically acclaimed show noted for its inventive character work and offbeat charm.
