About the artist

Waylon Jennings was an American country singer, songwriter, and guitarist widely regarded as a founding figure of the 1970s outlaw country movement, a rebellion against the polished, string-laden Nashville sound of the era. Alongside Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson, he formed the supergroup The Highwaymen, and his marriage and musical partnership with Jessi Colter made them one of country music's iconic duos. His raw, bass-driven guitar style and gravel-edged baritone became a signature sound that influenced generations of country and rock artists.

Over his career Jennings scored 16 number-one songs and 11 number-one albums, cementing him as one of the genre's most commercially and artistically significant figures. Songs like «Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys», «Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)», and «Good Hearted Woman» remain country standards, while his theme for The Dukes of Hazzard brought his voice to a mainstream television audience beyond the genre's usual reach.

Jennings was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 but declined to attend the ceremony, a gesture consistent with his lifelong resistance to the Nashville music establishment. He died just months later, leaving behind a legacy defined by defiant independence, a stripped-down honky-tonk and rock-inflected sound, and enduring influence on the outlaw country tradition.
