About the artist
Johnny Cash (1932–2003) was an American singer and songwriter whose deep, resonant baritone and stark, storytelling style made him one of country music's most enduring figures, while his rebellious edge also placed him among the founding figures of rock and roll. Raised in rural Arkansas, he began performing in the mid-1950s, recording for Sun Records in Memphis alongside contemporaries like Elvis Presley, and quickly developed a stripped-down sound built around his voice, guitar, and the tight rhythm of his backing band, the Tennessee Two.
Cash became known for songs that explored hardship, sin, redemption and the struggles of ordinary and marginalized people, exemplified by classics like «Folsom Prison Blues» and «I Walk the Line». His famous live albums recorded at Folsom and San Quentin prisons underscored his lifelong empathy for the incarcerated and outsiders, cementing his image as a voice for the downtrodden. Throughout his career he also performed extensively with his wife, June Carter Cash, on songs such as «Jackson».
In his later years, Cash experienced a remarkable creative resurgence through his American Recordings series, stripping his sound back to raw acoustic arrangements and reinterpreting songs from across genres, most famously his stark cover of «Hurt». Recognized in the Country, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame, Cash remains one of the most influential and widely covered artists in American music history, admired for his authenticity and unflinching honesty until his death in 2003.
