Waylon Jennings fue un cantante, compositor y guitarrista country estadounidense, considerado ampliamente una de las figuras fundadoras del movimiento outlaw country de los años setenta, una rebelión contra el sonido pulido y cargado de cuerdas de Nashville de la época. Junto a Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash y Kris Kristofferson formó el supergrupo The Highwaymen, y su matrimonio y sociedad musical con Jessi Colter los convirtió en uno de los dúos icónicos del country. Su estilo de guitarra crudo y guiado por el bajo, junto a su barítono áspero, se convirtió en un sonido característico que influyó en generaciones de artistas de country y rock.
A lo largo de su carrera, Jennings logró 16 canciones número uno y 11 álbumes número uno, consolidándose como una de las figuras más importantes del género tanto comercial como artísticamente. Canciones como «Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys», «Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love)» y «Good Hearted Woman» siguen siendo clásicos del country, mientras que su tema para The Dukes of Hazzard llevó su voz a una audiencia televisiva masiva fuera del género.
