Village People

Village People are an American disco group formed in the late 1970s by producers Jacques Morali and Henri Belolo together with lead singer Victor Willis. Built around costumed characters representing macho American archetypes — a police officer, a cowboy, a construction worker, a sailor, an American Indian chief and a leatherman — the group's name and imagery drew on New York's Greenwich Village, then a hub of gay culture, and its songs blended disco exuberance with campy, double-meaning lyrics.

The group became one of the defining acts of the disco era, scoring massive hits with «Y.M.C.A.», «In the Navy» and «Macho Man», songs whose singalong hooks and choreographed dance moves turned them into stadium and wedding-party staples that endure decades later. «Go West» later found a second life through a cover by Pet Shop Boys, while the group also starred in the 1980 film Can't Stop the Music.

Though disco's commercial peak faded in the early 1980s, Village People kept performing and recording, with the lineup evolving over the years around the group's core visual concept. Their catalog remains a touchstone of disco's crossover into mainstream pop culture and a fixture of sports arenas and celebrations worldwide.
