About the artist
Vicente Fernández (1940–2021) was a legendary Mexican singer, actor, and film producer widely regarded as «El Rey de la Música Ranchera» — the King of Ranchera Music. Born in Jalisco, he began his career singing for tips on the street before rising to become one of the most influential figures in regional Mexican music, releasing more than fifty albums and appearing in over thirty films across a career spanning decades.
Fernández's voice and style became inseparable from the ranchera tradition, often performing alongside mariachi ensembles, though he was not himself a mariachi musician in the strict sense. His rise to national prominence accelerated after the death of Javier Solís, and he went on to record enduring classics such as «El Rey», «Volver, Volver», and «Un Millón De Primaveras», songs that remain foundational to the genre and are still performed and covered widely across Latin America.
Over his career Fernández earned three Grammy Awards, eight Latin Grammy Awards, fourteen Lo Nuestro Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, selling over fifty million records worldwide. He retired from live performance in 2016 but continued recording. In August 2021 he suffered a serious fall that led to complications, and he passed away later that year, leaving behind a legacy as one of the defining voices of Mexican popular music and a cultural patriarch whose family, including his son Alejandro Fernández, continued the ranchera tradition.
