About the artist
Vanessa Carlton is an American singer-songwriter and pianist born on August 16, 1980, in Milford, Pennsylvania. Trained as a dancer at the School of American Ballet in New York, she gave up ballet to pursue music, performing in small New York City venues before recording a demo with producer Peter Zizzo that led to a deal with A&M Records. Her piano-driven pop sound, built around cascading arpeggios and confessional lyrics, set her apart from the guitar-centered pop of the early 2000s.
Her 2002 debut single «A Thousand Miles» became an international hit, reaching the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 and turning its instantly recognizable piano riff into one of the era's most enduring pop hooks. The accompanying album, Be Not Nobody, achieved platinum certification and established Carlton as one of the defining singer-songwriters of the early 2000s piano-pop wave.
Over the following two decades Carlton continued releasing introspective, melodically rich albums, gradually moving toward a more organic, folk- and indie-influenced sound while retaining the piano at the core of her songwriting. Songs like «White Houses» and «Ordinary Day» further cemented her reputation as a thoughtful lyricist whose work resonated with a generation of listeners who grew up with her breakout single.
